The Basics of Bankruptcy

But when you’re standing on the outside and not in the middle of the financial mess, it’s easy to see other alternatives. By selling the car, taking an extra job, living on a budget, having a garage sale, quit paying this or that – most people can make it out of the hole. There may be some dings on their credit but it’s better than filing bankruptcy.

Don't Let Your Car Own You

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 80% of car loans are for longer than 4 years. If you buy the car new, then by the time the loan runs out, the car will have lost between 60% and 70% of its value. That's beyond ridiculous ... it's stupid! Why would you get a $25,000 loan at 8% over 4 years, pay $598 a month, be stuck with a car worth $8,750 when the loan is done ... and think it's a smart idea?

Making That Paycheck Stretch!

1. No money to put gas in the car? Walk to work--it's good exercise. If walking is not an option, try to carpool with a co-worker who lives near. Or share a ride with your spouse. It may mean getting to work earlier, so be prepared to use extra time constructively. Start that book you've been wanting to read; take your needlework and finish a project you've not found time for, etc.

5 Steps To Healthy Spending Habits

Start with a spending log. Yes, you have heard this advice before. This exercise is eye-opening if you do it diligently. If you have been unable to keep such a log because it is tedious or difficult to remember, consider using your debit card for every purchase. You can find the Visa/Mastercard logo nearly everywhere you shop or buy, including many fast food spots. With online banking you will have access to a visual record of all your spending. This is a great way to begin to spot patterns and decide where you can cut back.
